Title: The Displaced Stone; a process of quarrying revealing the past
Institution: Oxford Brookes University(OBU) & Μητροπολιτικό Κολλέγιο(AMC)
The brief follows the journey of the famous Tinian marble trail from the moment it is cut and dislodged from themountain that created it, it then falls, is displaced and follows a route into the workshop building. This was a ritualfollowed by another very important one, the washing, cutting, carving, the transformation of a rock into craftsmanship.
The word, marble, derives from the Greek verbmarmairo, meaning to flash, sparkle.
Tinos provides the long tradition and craftmanship of the locals for marble art, through the centuries.
The project is placed in Vathi, on the southwest side of Tinos where Karagiorgis quarry and factory is established. Access is made either through the road or through the path that descends from the quarry to the sea.
The project for the redevelopment of the area and the re-use of the buildings focussed on-three areas: the educational trail (a path that leads to the quarry and the New Academia), the natural amphitheatre (promoting the rich natural diversity); the quarry workshop (the conversion of the old sheds where marble was processed into workshops and exhibition spaces).
The plot extends from the quarry, located 100m above sea level, to the beach where the factories are placed. The route is approx. 900m long.
70m above the sea level at the place of the old academy where the workers produced custom-made pieces from marble has turned into a New Academia where the Tinian marble art will be enhanced. The students learn marble curving, extracting the marble by themselves from the quarry while at the same time is created the initial concept of a marble block be dislodged from the mountain and then falls, displaced or be rotated influencing the process of creating buildable structures that facilitates the proposed uses.
While the narrative of the journey is very clear and very strong, this takes place in a very silent yet powerful context.
The plateaus at different points along the route and at the main New Academia building provide breath taking viewpoints towards the sea as well as towards the higher parts of the steep hill.
The building materials blend the main building with the local context in an extraordinary way as if it’s a natural part of it. Natural ventilation is provided in order to provide thermal comfort to all artists and staff working in the various spaces, especially during the warmer summer days.
